Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Can Affect Anyone

By:

Post-traumatic stress disorder otherwise referred to as PTSD is a mental illness which can affect anyone whos been exposed to some form of psychological trauma. Although around half of us suffer some sort of trauma in our lifetime, nearer eight per cent go on to develop full PTSD. The condition is often hard to define, as its symptoms include a number of other common mental illnesses. Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly prevalent and is known to be particularly common among former members of the military, as warzone exposure has been singled out as one of the primary causes of the condition.

Although it can take an extended period perhaps several months for the first signs of PTSD to appear, its impact can be long-lasting. It may take years for a sufferer to truly get over the illness, and the battle is often a testing and difficult one. The kind of trauma that triggers PTSD is difficult to define it all depends on the individual, the impact a particular event has on them and their susceptibility to mental illness and it is difficult to predict what the exact impact of the condition will be in the long term. Likewise, its symptoms differ from person to person where one sufferer may experience debilitating headaches, another may report nothing of the sort.

The best way to determine whether or not you have full PTSD and, from there, how you can go about resolving it is to seek help from a professional counsellor. This is often the most difficult step to take, as many people are unwilling to admit to themselves, first and foremost, that they have some sort of mental illness. Regrettably, some see it as a sign of weakness, or even a defeat. Its easy to pretend and play down the importance of your symptoms, but the harsh reality is that this may prove to exacerbate your problems in the long run. The longer you leave it without seeking help, the more likely your problems are to linger.

If youre not sure about how to find a counsellor operating in your local area, its well worth taking a look on the internet. There, you can get a better idea of how and when to arrange a consultation. Even if it turns out that you dont have PTSD, a full and frank discussion with an expert can help shine some light on your true condition and then you can move on and start to think about how youre going to overcome it once and for all.
