Maruti Suzuki Produces K-series Engines

The household name of Indian car industry, Maruti Suzuki India, is all set to introduce a new range of engine called the K-series for all its future models to compete with the Hyundais Kappa engine. It will also race with the iRDRE engine and the Chevrolets SOHC engine. Maruti Suzuki is the leading Indian small cars manufacturer and further wants to strengthen its position by launching cars with the all new K-series engine.

It is a 998CC three cylinder engine coming with Alto-K10, A star, Estilo and new WagonR which offers a maximum power 68PS @ 6200 rpm and maximum torque of 90Nm @ 3500 rpm in Alto-K10 and new WagonR whereas 67PS @ 6200rpm and torque of 90Nm @ 3500 rpm in A Star and Estilo. The engine is very popular for its high fuel efficiency of 20.2 kmpl.

The specialty of the engine is its fuel-efficient nature and compliance to Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission norms. Hyundai India has already introduced Euro 4-compliant engines across its range of models in India. It is the most advanced engines in the car manufacturers stable and in a span of 3-5 years all the Maruti-Suzukis existing models like Zen Estilo, Swift, and WagonR would also be fitted with the K-series engines. Maruti-Suzuki Splash, another hatchback to be launched by Maruti Suzuki will also make its entry in to Indian roads with K-series engine.

Currently, Maruti Suzuki uses five types of engines for its different models. To start with is the F-series engines for Maruti 800, Omni, Wagon R and Zen Estilo; the G-series engines which are used in the Swift, Swift Dzire and Versa; the M-series in the SX4, and the latest to be launched the K-series for upcoming cars like A Star which will be propelled by 1-litre K-series petrol engine. Initially, A-Star will be exported to Europe and then will slowly move on to other countries. The engine used in A-Star complies with the European emission standards. Maruti plans to capture the small cars segment by these next generation fuel efficient engines.

The company has successfully rolled out 5 Lakh K-series engine including the K10 and K12, which are fitted in Alto, A-Star, Wagon-R, Swift, Ritz, Zen Estilo, and Swift Dzire respectively. In less than 23 months since the first K-series engine in October 2008, the company has manufactured 500,000 units which the company plans to increase by 200,000 more units by 2012.
