Writing A Comic Book

Most comic book fans dream about the day that they can publish a comic book of their own. Maybe you are one of those enthusiasts and have toyed around with the idea but have never actually finished a book. Writing a comic book takes discipline, creativity, and dedication. Writing a comic book is a creative field and takes some practice but don't let this scare you off!

If you are thinking about writing a comic book, remember you need to be familiar with two seemingly disparate fields. The first is, of course, writing. When writing a comic book, you will be in charge of a story that needs to be told. You will be working out plot points and looking for ways to make your plots work and your characters believable. Similarly, you will need to have an understanding of comics as a storytelling medium. One of the first things you will need to learn is that comic books have advantages over traditional prose material and video, but you will also need to remember that it is similarly limited. Take a good look at the genre of writing for comic books and make sure you know what you are getting into!

With writing a comic book, much like other forms of art, you need to make sure that you have samples of your work to show. If you are writing a comic book, there are several formats that this might take. If you're on your own, a copy of a comic script may suffice, but if you are working with an artist, you should have a sample of your work to send around. Whether this is a small, self-contained comic, or a riff off of a well known theme or character, make sure that you have something that will really showcase your skills when it comes to writing a comic book.

Once you have put together a solid comic strip it is time to get out there and mingle with others in your career choice. You can do this by simply going to a few conventions here and there and meeting with people. This will surely help further your career advancement. It is important that you dress professional and have some sort of business card that way you can be contacted easily. It also would be beneficial for you to have a little introduction planned out in your head so you have something to break the ice. Writing a comic book is the first step in your new career path now you just have to get out there and prove your worth!

This should get you set on the right path towards writing a comic book. Remeber that in order to succeed you need to have an in depth understanding of your genre, simply being a fan isn't enough!
