Working Online: Why You Should Learn To Grow Beans When You Work Online

By: Elaine Currie

If you Work online you need to do something different during the quiet summer season.

As I write this, it is the start of the summer season and business on the Internet is slow. It's not that things have gone out of fashion or anything like that, it's simply that people are doing other things instead of spending time on the Internet, it happens every summer.

Most types of Internet based businesses will feel the sudden slow down because the season affects so many different types of person. Often their customers are mothers who are currently being kept busy with entertaining and caring for their school-age children who are making the most of the long summer vacation. Grandparents who would normally visit your website will be too busy if they have been enlisted to look after grandchildren while both parents go out to work. Students are busy travelling as far and wide as possible while they have the freedom to do so. Ordinary citizens are enjoying their annual vacation in pursuits as diverse as surfing, scuba diving, rock climbing, visiting foreign cities or just lying on a beach reading trashy novels.

What can you do to drum up more visitors during the slow summer season? Not very much, unfortunately. Even a spell of bad weather won't help a great deal: if people have pre-booked vacations lined up, they are going to make the best of things no matter what the weather does. Bad weather definitely won't make things easier for anyone taking care of kids who would rather be pursuing outdoor activities.

So, what should you do to get through the summer? Spending extra time on your Internet business is not the answer. The answer is, in fact, do anything but that. Make use of the slowdown in Internet trade to do some housekeeping so your business will be in tip-top order when summer is over, then take yourself off to do something completely unconnected with your business.

As an online business owner who is usually engrossed in Internet activities, suddenly having time for yourself can be a bit scary and you won't know what to do with those extra hours. Growing beans can help you: it is easy to do and is a rewarding pastime. If you have ever picked and eaten your own home-grown beans, you will know what I mean.

Of course you don't have to grow beans (or any vegetable), I just mentioned growing beans as an example because that's one of the things I like to do in the slow Internet summer season. The point is that you should do something as far removed from your normal business activities as possible. If there is something you always wanted to do like going caving, or skiing or learning how to cook or paint watercolor pictures, do it during the quiet spell when you can have guilt-free time off.

It doesn't matter if you choose to do something worthwhile such as helping a charitable organization or something frivolous such as learning to dance, as long as it is something completely different and makes you happy, it is a good use of your time. You will benefit from the change from Internet life and your business will benefit because you will return to it with recharged energy levels and renewed enthusiasm.
