Why Referencing Example Essays Is Crucial To Student Learning

Students normally tend to rely on inappropriate sources of instruction containing topics on how to make references. Most of them usually know that they are not doing the required task by relying on unsuitable sources that often mislead them by not providing the proper advice or information. It is advisable for students to consult their tutors, course handouts, or the right reference text available in the course rather than turning to old handouts from high schools, parents, and friends for advice.

Students not only need to purchase trustworthy, university-level resource guides, but they should also know how to make good use of them! Many students read the text books as a dictionary from page one onwards with a hope that they will eventually get an answer to their question, having no knowledge of the concept of the reference source.

Many times the students believe that some types of sources are exempt despite reading tutorials to the contrary. Others have the idea that government records, records from other sources, and course texts do not need referencing. Others will state that they only need to reference restricted types of sources, not using other people's words or thoughts but statistical facts, use of direct quotes and not paraphrasing. A number will argue that there is no need to reference the ideas found in the essay body, believing that the footnotes will be more than sufficient referencing. This reveals a basic misunderstanding of the sense of accurate referencing.

Weak essay writing skills will always reflect some of the complications that students experience in mastering the mechanical skills of good referencing. Those students with no confidence in their essay writing always find it hard to meet the requirements of good referencing when writing.
