What's The Deal? Is Whiplash Real? How Does It Feel? Does It Heal?

By: Daniel Beasley

Neck braces and claims of whiplash seemed to develop a negative stigma after some people tried to use false claims of whiplash to get more money from insurance companies after an automobile accident. However, whiplash is a real condition and does not deserve the reputation of a false ailment.

First used in 1928, whiplash is a non-medical term used to describe soft-tissue damage or strain and its pain. Typically whiplash occurs when ligaments, tendons, and muscles are strained due to an impact or force that causes the neck to suddenly move outside its normal range of motion.

There are various incidents that can cause whiplash, including:
* Motor vehicle accidents
* Sporting injuries
* Falls
* Assaults
* Objects striking the head

The most common cause of whiplash is auto accidents. The car accident does not need to be severe, especially since whiplash can occur in accidents in which the vehicles are traveling as slow as 15 miles per hour.

Symptoms of whiplash, which may occur immediately following an incident or which may be delayed by several days, include:
* Neck stiffness
* Headache
* Dizziness or light-headedness
* Shoulder pain
* Back pain
* Memory loss
* Difficulty concentrating
* Fatigue
* Sleep disturbances
* Fatigue
* Depression

It is considered a fraudulent act to falsely claim whiplash in order to increase compensation from insurance or a lawsuit. Despite what many people believe, it is not simple to fake whiplash. A doctor who is familiar with the types of pain and limits of range of motion of the neck in whiplash cases can typically spot someone who is trying to fake the condition. It is not worth the possible fines or jail time associated with fraud.

If you have been injured in a car crash or other accident, it is important to be checked out by a doctor. If you are suffering from whiplash, there are several treatments available to help reduce the pain associated with the soft tissue damage.
