What does Web Development have to do with Information Technology?

By: Shruti Sharma

Information Technology is a creative discipline that affects most businesses and industries. Its progressive evolution, due to the advancement of computers, and communication technology, continues to have a profound impact on our lives.
One area of Information Technology is Web Development. A few recent innovations have impacted the world of businesses as much as the internet. What was originally designed as a closed information network for defense has expanded into today’s global web of information, entertainment and commerce. There are hundred of thousands of business websites (running either on Internal Intranet or on a global accessible platform of the World Wide Web) needs people behind the scenes to help keep the information current and secured online, known as Web Developers.

What is Web Development?
Web development is a broad term for any activities related to developing a website for the World Wide Web or the Intranet. However, among web professionals, “web development” refers only to the non-design aspects of building websites, e.g. writing markup and coding. Web Development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to most complex web-based internet applications.

What’s the relationship of Web Development with IT?
IT is a necessary part of keeping the web alive. But is totally different from the creation of a website. Information Technology is, and always should be, concerned with reliability, stability and effectiveness of serving a website. And those creating website should focus their complete attention on effectiveness of the message, design, interface and the content.
A website’s face and structure may come from its design but its soul come from the developers. Until developers understand and connect with the message and goals, and put themselves in the shoes of the target audience, that soul will be lacking. So the responsibility lies on the developer to align themselves with the marketing strategy for the website, and be able to develop the matching solutions.
As a web developer, there are simple ways to test if you fully understand a website that you are building. At any point, you should be able to identify the target audience and primary goal of the site. Should have the knowledge about the browsing habits of that audience, and any technical ways to achieve this goal.
Advices to:
• Web developer: who’s only experience is programming, I would encourage them to educate themselves on the newest marketing techniques. If they work with an organization with a marketing department, talk to them and learn from them
• Web marketer: who isn’t a programmer, be sure to help the developers understand your strategy. Once they do, they will be a tremendous asset to the construction of the website.
• Management (over IT and/or Marketing) : please don’t align the responsibility of web development of any kind with Information Technology. The two will work hand in hand, but they are certainly not the same.
