What are Sleep Disorders?

By: Beth Ibarra

People throughout the world have difficulty sleeping each and every night and cannot figure out why they cannot fall asleep or get enough sleep in one night. Many sleep problems are caused by different environmental factors, the weight of the person, a change in jobs and even stress in your life. Sleep problems can be cured with medication, different therapies and sometimes even breathing machines if need be.

Some of the most common sleep disorders are insomnia, snoring, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy and night terrors. All of these conditions have different reasons for occurring and have different therapies for solving them as well. People who suffer from these sleeping conditions are often drowsy, delirious, grumpy and mentally out of it during the day because they do not get enough sleep at night.

Sleep disorders affect over one million people per year and one of the most common disorders is insomnia. Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or remain asleep for a prolonged period of time.

Most of the people that suffer from insomnia will experience a night of non-existent sleep. Causes of this condition differ from patient to patient but the majority of them are obesity, diabetes, heart failure, emotional or physical distress, a change in working hours, jet lag and environmental factors such as noise and light.

Three are three main forms of insomnia. They include transient insomnia, short-term insomnia and chronic insomnia. Insomnia, being one of the most common of the sleep disorders, can be cured. Patients with insomnia need to schedule a regular sleep pattern, avoid jet lag at all costs, lose weight, turn off any unnecessary lights and noises in the bedroom and solve any snoring problems that could lead to insomnia problems.

Snoring is just as common as insomnia as a member of the sleep disorders category. Snoring is when a person has noisy breathing while sleeping. The noisy breathing can affect not only the person doing it but also the sleep partner.

A person who snores can wake themselves up in the middle of the night because of the loud noise, which can lead to a bad night of sleep because of all the interruptions. Snoring problems can be solved by using a breathing strip while sleeping.

All of these sleeping problems can be rectified for each individual patient. It just takes time, perseverance and a visit to the doctor for an examination.

Another cause of sleep problems is sleep apnea. This is when a person literally stops breathing in air for a period of time while sleeping. Most people suffering from sleep apnea will wake up frequently throughout the night but will not remember doing so when they arise the next morning. The sleep partner for a sufferer of sleep apnea would be able to pick up on the signs of the disorder and alert the patient about their possible condition.

If you are suffering from any of the above mentioned sleep problems you should consult your physician immediately for an examination and a possible remedy. A doctor can offer a solution to a better night of sleep.
