Any water damage can make your home or office unsafe to be in especially if it not repaired. If you happen to have an overflow from your sink or tub, do the best you can to clean it up. The smallest amount can get under your flooring or behind the baseboards and hide. This will cause you problems later because the moisture will stay in these places causing other kinds of damages to show up. This damage will be in the form of wood rot and mold development.
This water will cause your carpet to rot the floors too. If it got into any wiring of the home it could cause a short out which could start a fire. It could get into the walls of your home and into the insulation causing this to become wet so that it will be no good. Mold can grow in many types of insulation and when it starts growing behind a wall it is difficult to find without tearing out a section of wall. This can often happen in a bathroom when water is getting behind the tub or shower surround through cracks in the tile where caulking or grout is missing.
Water does not care where it lands so it will go anywhere it can. It will seep into the smallest cracks going as far as it can. It can seep into the cracks of cement in areas like the basement or even the chimney. So it will seem like no matter what you do to prevent water damages from happening it will. Sometimes water damage to your home might come from sources that you have no control of. This would be a lake, creek, river, or stream by your house and the amount of rain you could receive in a day or a couple of days time. When and if you have several days of rain, it could reach your home from the foundation of the home and seep into the basement or crawlspace. When you get standing water in either of these places it can damage any wood it gets on and cause moisture and mold.
Once mold has taken hold and started growing anywhere in the home, the spores it produces can travel to other parts of the home. If it can find enough warmth, moisture, and a food source like wood, insulation, drywall, fabric, or even paper, it can grow there as well. This is why anytime you find a water problem anywhere in your home it has to be taken care of quickly. Do not let it linger without repairing it because it will only get worse and cause more problems and cost more money in the long run.
