Want To Study After Finishing School But Clueless As To Where?

By: Tara McGovern

You've finished school, want to get a brilliant qualification, but have no idea what, where or how to begin making your decision! Are your parents bugging you about your sedentary lifestyle, urging you to pick your derriere off the couch and off to study something? Choosing a place where you want to spend a few years of your time and a bit of your folk's money is never easy. Some go the University route: stuffy classes, critical appreciations and no practical experience. Others decide on a Technikon and get a qualification which is sometimes not recognised. In South Africa today, unemployment is rife; everyone is struggling to find work, even those with University degrees. But to guarantee yourself a good chance at living a comfortable life (couch included) you need to study after school. Your parents can't look after you forever and they are already on your case to further your education... So what are your options?

Have you ever considered a career in something creative? Not creative in the sense of living in a box for a week and calling it "art". CityVarsity is a college which specialises in media and creative arts and is a leader of its kind in the country. It is the only institution that offers a comprehensive mix of media and creative arts education programs accredited by the Council On Higher Education. The college has two campuses, one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg: both are havens of the media and creative industry. The lecturers are all experienced professionals and pass information from their experience and knowledge straight to the students. The college offers a vast selection of courses to participate in. Creativity thrives on the campus, whether it is technical creativity or artistic creativity.
People have the misconception that a school of media and creative arts is all about being hip, extremely alternative and (for lack of a better word) "deep". Often Visions of a group of students reciting poetry whilst sipping wine from goblets come to mind. However, whilst a school of creative arts and media does thrive on a creative basis, the need to be "arty" is only necessary for those pursuing courses where art and design is a fundamental base. And even then, students need to be "arty" in their work and studies, not how they socialise!

For example, a course such as Multimedia Design requires extensive knowledge of software used in the industry. The course is artistic but technical skills are required too. The same goes for Film & Television Production Techniques: the course focuses on many technical aspects of the industry such as camera work and lighting whilst developing a critical appreciation of Film and TV theory and creating your own productions.
CityVarsity is also responsible for beginning the process of filling the skills gap in the media market. There is an enormous shortage of skills in the film and television industry and with the 2010 Football World Cup looming upon the country, as well as cities like Cape Town being new film hot spots, the local film and television industry is suffering. Courses such as Animation, Film & Television Production Techniques, Production Design, and Multimedia Design (to name a few) are responsible for the closing of the skills gap in South African film and television.
So if you are looking to study something that will be well recognised, virtually guarantees employment, gives you practical experience and will never be boring; why not apply to study at CityVarsity? But hurry because our term is about to start so you need to apply today if you want to be a part of the action! See their website www.cityvarsity.co.za for details. When you study at CityVarsity and immerse yourself in the media and creative arts fields, you will find doors opening for you.
