Vinegar For Heartburn Why Is It Your Best Cure When You Are Battling Acid Reflux?

By: Terry Fallon

It has long been said that an apple a day will keep the doctor away. Sometimes there is great wisdom in those old sayings. Perhaps many of the old timers were thinking of the healing power of apple cider vinegar. For many years vinegar for heartburn has been a common prescription. And it really works!

Are you among those that are afraid of taking prescription medications because of the possible bad side affects? Have the horror stories in the news about dangerous drugs made you hesitate whenever your doctor pulls out his or her prescription pad?

On the other hand, people are more and more aware of old time remedies that really work.
These informed people are more comfortable with a natural approach to health and healing.

Apple cider vinegar has been used to promote good health for thousands of years. A partial list of the ailments it is known to cure are: acne, allergies and sinus infections, high cholesterol, sore throats, flatulence, headaches, colds, coughs, gout, arthritis, and constipation. Apple cider vinegar for acid reflux, or heartburn, has also been a long time natural treatment that has been used successfully without bad side effects.

Acid reflux disease (or GERD: gastro-esophageal reflux disease), has plagued people for a long time and it seems to be getting worse and more severe. What is acid reflux? It is an uncomfortable condition that is caused when the lower esophageal sphincter does not function properly, allowing the stomach liquids to go back to the esophagus.

This condition, also known as heartburn, creates a burning sensation in the throat that can be downright scary and even affect your ability to breathe!

Acid reflux is not uncommon. Many people experience it --- especially after eating hot and spicy foods. However, most people only experience it on infrequent occasions. When it comes back constantly, week after week, you need to get to a doctor for a diagnosis.

Can acid reflux be dangerous? Yes. Once the lining of the esophagus is destroyed you can be in for some serious problems, so it is important to be examined and diagnosed by a certified health professional if you have persistent heartburn.

Heartburn is commonly treated with antacids --- but some people have found this treatment makes their condition worse. How? The antacids reduce their stomach acid, so their body receives a signal that it is "low" on stomach acid! The brain, in turn, instructs the stomach to begin producing more acid! When the antacid wears off, the heartburn is worse than ever!

Instead of antacid, some people mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it before meals (or whenever they suffer heartburn.) This works for them!

Why does this work?

It may be because the acetic acid in vinegar lowers stomach acidity, increasing its pH. This is likely because the acetic acid in vinegar is weaker than stomach acid and it seems to cause the stomach acid to remain at a pH level around 3.0 which is a milder acidic environment, yet still strong enough for digestion. This, in turn, causes less problems for the esophagus --- reducing the liklihood of heartburn.

Some folks complain about the taste of the water and vinegar, but frankly, I don't mind it at all. Like the taste or not, everyone seems to agree that a brief unpleasant (not strong) taste is well worth the benefits it brings!

es, apple cider vinegar for heartburn is a natural remedy that many people have found effective, inexpensive, and without unpleasant side effects. Don't you agree it is certainly worth a try?

Remember that acid reflux can be a serious problem that is multi-faceted. The key to long lasting relief is actually curing the condition.
