Using Fuel Additives In Your Car

By:

Fuel additives can be used in your car to act as a lubricant or to increase your gases octane ratings. While these are two great benefits to using fuel additives they can contain products that re very dangerous to the environment such as antioxidants, oxygenates, corrosion inhibitors and metal deactivators.

Some of the more general fuel additives include ether and flammable hydrocarbons. These are used mainly for diesel engines as they can help start vehicles that have difficult to start engines. Nitrous oxide is used in auto racing for extra power as nitrous is an oxidizing agent. Nitromethano is used in high performance racing fuels.

Some racing fuel contains methanol and acetone is added to help with vaporization at start up. Butyl rubber is added to diesel engines to reduce problems with the diesel fuel injector. Ferox is a type of catalyst additive that helps to clean the engine, emits less pollution and increase the fuel economy of the vehicle.

Other more specific classes of additives include hybrid compound blends that include a combustion catalyst, burn rate modifier, polymerization, stabilizer, demulsifier, dispersant, corrosion inhibitor, catalyst and detergents. These blends will contain a combination of the above mentioned compounds and will help your car run, get better gas mileage and increase the life of your engine.

There are other additives such as Teflon micro beads that can be poured into the fuel and then are forced onto surfaces of metal that may be wearing. This can extend the time you need between oil changes. Some additives are also certified or approved by the FAA. The most effective additives are the one that need to be used regularly and on the direction will say that they must be used whenever oil is added or when you add g as.

Many times fuel additives are used during winter in very cold climates so that the gas will not freeze or turn into a gel. Winter fuel additives can also prevent rust and wear on the fuel injector. You might also be surprised that during the winter the gas you are putting into your car is also different as it is designed to work better in cold temperatures.

You should not add fuel additives to your car unless you feel there is a problem. Pay attention to your fuel system and then determine which additives to use. Multi purpose additives are great if you regularly want to use an additive to help with your cars performance. If you want better acceleration then a booster type additive can be a good choice.

Vehicles that run on diesel tend to do better with fuel additives because diesel can be hard to start but is a great fuel for driving long distances. The additives tend to make the diesel vaporize easier and generally act like starter fluid.

You do need to remember that by adding a type of fuel additive to your car you will not be stretching the time between servicing. You still need to regularly maintain your car. A fuel additive is another preventative measure that can keep your car healthy and experiencing less problems when maintaining it.
