Use Soapstone to Beautify Your Home

By: Anne Harvester

Soapstone is a beautiful decorative rock that is made up of talc and magnesium. It has been used throughout history for carving. Today soapstone is used as a material from which soapstone stoves, soapstone blocks and counters are constructed for use in the home.

In times past and in many different cultures, soapstone was used for carving a wide variety of items. Statuary, inlaid designs, sculpture, bowls, fireplace surrounds, cookware, tables, smoking pipes, gravestones and even temples have been found in archaeological digs and other ruins that featured the use of soapstone.

Modern applications include soapstone stoves. Soapstone is the perfect material to use in the creation of a stove for several reasons. Primary is the fact that soapstone is heat resistant, heat retentive and heat conducive. This means that fuel placed inside a soapstone stove will burn very hot and completely vaporize the fuel material. After the fuel has been burned, however, the soapstone releases the retained heat from the fuel for a very long time after the initial fire. This provides a great cost savings to the home owner, who can enjoy the heat radiated from a soapstone stove long after the fuel is already burned up. In addition, because the fuel is completely consumed, there is no messy soot, ash or creosote; neither is there smoke.

In addition to heating your home, soapstone is great for other uses around the house as well. Countertops can also be crafted from this stone. It comes in both light and dark shades, so that you can blend in its natural colors and veining with the rest of your home design and decor. Countertops from this stone can withstand use around water, and thus make a great choice for the kitchen or bathroom.

Sinks can also be made from soapstone. The nice thing about a soapstone sink is that it is custom designed and built to your home's specific needs and look that you are working to achieve. Round or square designs are all possible with this versatile material. You might even choose double sinks in a bathroom vanity, along with matching countertops. Sinks can be custom crafted from a single large block that is carved, or they can also be made by gluing together custom-cut slabs of stone. A sink of this caliber can be used as a striking design feature and accent in any room in your home.

Soapstone is the building material that makes all of these products useful, durable and beautiful.
