Use Indian Baskets For Unique Mountain Interior Design

By: Nelson Montana

Indian baskets come from a long and interesting history of native lifestyle. I like using these unique baskets to bring Native American style to my home. It is fascinating when you start studying the history of Indian basket weaving and find that basket use actually began hundreds of years ago and is one of the oldest art forms known in North American history. Indian baskets, made by Tribes like the Pueblo, Apache, Navajo and Tarahumara are well-known for their detailed, hand-crafted designs and intricate styles. As you learn about basket weaving, you will learn that in many Native American Tribes, women are given the task of basket weaving and learn as a young girl from their mothers. Baskets are used for many things in the daily lives of the Native Indians and allow the people to make a living.

As you will find, Indian baskets not only work well as rustic decorating accessories, but they are also very functional. In the beginning, baskets were designed in Inigenous culture as a way to protect valued items like food, clothing, animal hides, blankets and even water. Years ago, Indian Tribes changed locations regularly and had to invent ways to keep their things safe while still being able to move them easily. Unlike pottery made from clay, baskets were durable and would not break. Today, Tribes still use baskets in their houses and dwellings to protect their items and keep them organized. They also serve as a means of income for many Indigenous families, and play an important part in Native ceremonies and tribal rituals, such as Navajo wedding ceremonies, and in rights of passage ceremonies.

There are many kinds of Native American baskets and each Tribe has different designs. Southwest style, Native Indian baskets are some of the most well-known in the world and are regarded as a true art form. The way these baskets are made is truly amazing and is very impressive to watch. The two types of baskets made by this Tribe are the yucca or sotol as it is also called, and baskets made of pine needles. Baskets made of Yucca are very well-known and come in various shapes and sizes. Pine baskets are more popular in the mountain region where pine trees are prevalent, but are smaller than the yucca baskets and more delicate.

There are many kinds of weaving styles Indigenous Tribes use to make baskets that differ between Tribes. The guari type, the most commonly used weave among the Tarahumara in the mountain region of Northern Mexico, is round at the top, somewhat square, and has four well-defined corners at the bottom. The petaca is another type of weave used mainly in the canyon regions, and is rounded and often double woven. Sometimes the leaves are run back and forth on a rough stone to dull the sharp edges before the basket is started.

Native baskets come in many different types, patterns and colors based on the Tribe and the area where it is made. Even if you don't have the chance to see basket weaving first-hand and select an Indian basket of your own, you can still have a piece of this Native art form. It is easy to buy southwest style baskets online and in stores that sell beautiful, genuine style home decorating accessories. Bring Native American culture to life in your home with unique, hand-crafted Indian baskets.
