Today's World of Speed Reading

By: Kale McClelland

In the fast-paced world of today, speed reading is essential. Students, academics and researchers especially need to learn and perfect the art of speed reading. This skill is essential for anyone who needs to gather information from books, newspapers, and journals in a short time frame. In order to master the art of speed reading, one has to determine what information is to be gathered from that particular magazine, newspaper or book.

By flipping through that book rapidly you can make out the broad gist of the book and learn only the vital details. But you have to learn certain speed reading techniques if you want to grasp the whole concept of the book or journal concerned. Such techniques include cutting down on fixing time and hop back time, and building on the word count per block.

Following are the various techniques of speed reading:

Speed reading method #1 - In order to read faster, it is essential to cut down on fixing time. It usually takes us a quarter of a second to read a block of words. This method involves the reduction of that time. By decreasing that time, we can reduce the amount of time needed to go through the whole book. When we teach our minds to reduce fixing time, we can glean more information in a shorter time period.

Speed reading method #2 - Another technique to read faster is to push your word count up or the number or words you read in one glance. For example, if you place the page at a little distance away from you eyes, you will be able to read a larger block of words in less time. You are able to increase the number of words you read within a certain time frame. This method can help anyone read much faster.

Speed reading method #3:- One of the problems which one inevitably has to negotiate while reading is the 'hop back time'. Your eyes inexorably hop back to the previous sentence during reading. In order to prevent this you could use a pencil or finger or indicator to underline the sentence you are reading. This ensures that your attention remains focused on that very sentence, and not jump back to the earlier one. Thus you can achieve a faster read.

Significance of Speed Reading:

By reading rapidly through the content page of the book you can form an idea of what the book is all about. So you can, as a result, form an idea of what you need to learn from the book. At all costs you need to avoid rereading. So you need to know what exactly you want from the book, and in which chapters you get it. As mentioned before, speed reading methods are a must know for academicians today so they can gather more data within a shorter time.

Let's look at this example. Suppose a student has to write a project and needs books for it. If the student buys the book, it is not possible to take in each little detail. He or she has to be satisfied with skimming through the book. Here is where speed reading can comes in. One can normally read 4 to 5 words per second. However, one that is accomplished in speed reading can read up to 12 words per second. With determination, one can become a very rapid reader. If you remember the previous speed reading tips, all you need to do is practice in order to be able to become a faster reader.
