Tips for Interviews!

By: Bryony Roe

Interviews are always formal affairs. They are short meetings that are not intended to put you under pressure but to find out as much as possible about who your are. It is wise to consider every interview you are invited to as something that could potentially change your career. If you arrive for an interview looking professional and feeling well prepared, you will inevitably leave your interviewer with a far better first impression and are therefore more likely to be offered the position.

Similarly, by approaching interviews in an informal, relaxed manner, you will appear far less professional and therefore your chances of success will be limited. When spoken to by a recruiter or potential employer, consider the fact that they are scrutinizing the information you give them. Avoid giving them any reason to turn your application down.

During your interview, try to maintain eye contact. This conveys confidence and shows that you are not effected by pressure. By avoiding looking directly at someone, it suggests that you are feeling uncomfortable.

When talking to your interviewer, try to speak clearly and articulately. Organize your thoughts before opening your mouth and have confidence in your responses. If you do not understand a question - ask for clarification. Do not speak to quietly or you will sound nervous.

Something that people forget about interviews is that they are supposed to be an exchange of information. They are not interrogations, but chances for potential employers to gauge a little more about you. Likewise, they are a chance for you to get a sense of what working somewhere might be like. For this reason, don't be frightened to ask questions. The more inquisitive you are, the more interested you will sound - and therefore the more likely you are to be offered the job!

Remember that your interviewer is human too! You will find that you do better if you look for some common ground. Obviously you should keep the conversation formal but it is ok to engage them. Your aim in an interview is to leave your interviewer remembering who you are and how easy you are to get along with!

Stay positive and optimistic at all times. If you disliked your last boss or colleges, try to refrain from disclosing this information. Making negative comments regarding your job history will leave your interviewer feeling uneasy. It is important to leave a lasting impression but avoid letting it be - 'that candidate had a bad attitude'.

When promoting your abilities and skills, try to keep a healthy balance between humble and arrogant. Try to show that you are happy to help but also that you are strong willed and individual. At the end of the meeting, give your interviewer a firm hand shake and thank them for their time.
