1. Follow the right diet for heartburn.

This means you need to avoid foods that cause heartburn, which includes:

- Chocolate
- Coffee
- Spearmint and peppermint
- Alcoholic drinks
- Fruit juices like orange juice, lemon, lemonade, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice
- Ground beef, chuck
- Marbled sirloin
- Chicken nuggets
- Buffalo wings
- Dairy products such as sour cream, milk shake, ice cream and regular cottage cheese
- Macaroni and cheese
- Spaghetti with sauce
- Tea
- Fatty foods and fried foods
- Onions
- Citrus fruits

- Products which are tomato-based
- Caffeinated drinks
- Spices such as garlic, onions, red or black pepper and chili powder
- Baked food high in fat like butter cookies, brownies, doughnuts,
- Junk foods like corn chips and regular potato chips

These are the ones that are often hard to digest, very acidic or cause the lower esophageal sphincter to weaken. On the other hand, there are certain foods that you can eat and are not dangerous to your condition. The safe foods for heartburn sufferers like you are:

- Food rich in complex carbohydrates like bread, cereal, graham crackers, pretzels
- Apples, either the pulp or the juice
- Banana
- Baked potato
- Green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots
- Legumes and lentils like green beans and peas
- Meat low in fat like extra-lean ground beef and skinless chicken breast
- Egg whites
- Fish without added fat
- Low-fat dairy products
- Low-fat salad dressings and desserts

2. Stop smoking.

Studies had proven that smokers are prone to getting this condition by seventy percent, and smokers who already have heartburn are found to have worse symptoms compared to those who don't smoke.

Besides, nicotine is one of the causes that can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, so it's just obvious that you need to quit smoking if you want to prevent heartburn.

3. Practice other preventive measures.

You can prevent heartburn if you follow some helpful practical tips below:

- Don't lie down immediately after eating. You should wait for two hours at least before you lie down.
- Don't wear tight clothes nor tight belts around your waist.
- Don't eat large meals. This will cause the digestive system to work harder, causing it to produce more acids.
- Raise the head of your bed by six to eight inches.
- Don't be overweight. Being overweight adds more pressure on the abdomen, pushing the stomach contents upwards to the esophagus.

These heartburn home remedies, if you think about it, are not so hard to do and are not expensive at all. If you want to take medications, you may, but it would be best to combine them with these practical, home remedies so you can increase your chances of avoiding heartburn.
