The city might be notorious for its complex road network, but theres no need to get tied up like spaghetti when you need to send a parcel to Birmingham. Birmingham is the second biggest city in England, and regarded as the commercial and industrial powerhouse of the Midlands region. More than a million people live within the city boundaries, but the West Midlands region, of which Birmingham is the principal conurbation, has a total population of more than 2.3million, which takes in such important surrounding towns and cities as Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Solihull, Lichfield, Tamworth and Bromsgrove.

Birmingham is a major centre of higher education in the UK, boasting three universities and two university colleges, with a total student population approaching 70,000, and with staff numbers of more than 15,000, these establishments are also major employers in the region.

Aside from its road network, Birmingham is also a hub for rail and air travel in the UK. New Street railway station sees direct trains to more stations than any other on the rail network on the British mainland, and is used by more than four million passengers every year.

Birmingham International Airport is six miles east of the city centre, in the suburb of Bickenhill which is also home to the UKs National Exhibition Centre, and the National Indoor Arena, one of the countrys largest indoor music and entertainment venues.

The airport is a heavily-used freight hub, with direct services to all major European cities, and while it is less important these days for the transport of goods, Birmingham is also proud to boast that it has more miles of canals than Venice.
