Therapist in Carlsbad - What is the difference between an obsession and addiction?

Many of us become confused about the difference with the terms obsession and addiction. You might say that you’re obsessed with this gadget. But also you may also say that you’re addicted with the same gadget. The lines become blurry. So what’s that thin line that separates the two? What separates a drug obsession from say, a drug addiction? Let’s take a short journey in understanding the difference between these two different yet closely similar words.

Let’s tackle first the word: obsession. In my personal opinion as a therapist in Carlsbad, being obsessed or having an obsession is a persistent hunger on a fixed idea or a sensation or passion which isn’t always necessary. This means that you desire one thing which isn’t always needed by your body. It is a feeling of need which is triggered by hormones in your brain. The negative implication of this is that you would miss out on reality. Because of persistent thinking of the thing which you’re obsessed to, you neglect common things like eating, taking a bath, or even sleeping. You are too busy on thoughts about a certain object or person that it prevents you from living a normal life. You fail to even realize the moment in which you currently living in.

On the other hand, addiction is a state in which your body is enslaved by any addictive substance like heroin, marijuana, or alcohol. Simply put, a chemical alteration takes place within the brain which triggers the wanting for that substance. Also an expert, such as a therapist in Carlsbad, may refer to addiction as doing a certain thing habitually that in the long run you already require yourself to do it so as to feel normal. Here are just a few other habits which may be considered an addiction if regularly done by a person:

Pornography
Gambling
Food
Sex
Computer usage/web surfing
Computer games
Work
Exercise

A therapist in Carlsbad can help you overcome your addiction.

Now presented with the definition and example of obsession and addiction you may now have a clearer view on the difference between the two. Obsession basically is more of a psychological problem which triggers the wanting. On the other hand addiction is more of a dependence on a substance like alcohol or any type of drugs which a person intakes, which can also create a strong chemical alteration within the brain that forces the user to become dependent on the addictive substance. But also addiction is referred to anything which is done habitually by person thus relying too much on it until he or she requires himself to do it every day to feel normal. Hopefully this would help us in recognizing the difference between the two, making it easier for us to help others if we or someone we know is experiencing such symptoms.

If you or someone you know needs help battling an addiction, find a therapist in Carlsbad who can guide you through the necessary steps to finally fight back.

Over the past 10 years of seeing clients I’ve noticed that no matter if the client is an individual, teen, or couple there is always an issue with communication…or lack there of. People just don’t know how to communicate their feelings effectively or don’t communicate feelings at all, but instead verbalized criticisms and judgments. As a result, self esteem decreases, emotions are repressed, and resentment builds.
