After ten weeks of treatment, the group that received therapeutic massage showed much more pain relief and less disability than the other groups. Even after a full year of treatment, the group that received therapeutic massage still consistently needed the least amount of pain medication while showing much improved results as compared to the group that received acupuncture therapy.

The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami also conducted a study which showed that therapeutic massage reduced back pain, depression and anxiety among participants while improving their quality of sleep. The levels of serotonin and dopamine hormones were increased, reducing the participants stress and raising their feeling of well being. Their range of motion was also much improved.
