Green is the next new thing even parks are finally jumping on the bandwagon. While green parks may seem obvious, many things that parks currently do are not the most environmentally friendly practices. In fact because of the high foot traffic at many parks, they can be a major contributor to environmental problems.Some of the biggest offenders are theme parks. Theme parks have thousands of visitors each day, who consume food and drinks, and leave a trail of trash behind. They also consume a large amount of electricity in order to operate the many rides and attractions. Theme parks are constantly renovating, which means that they consume a large amount of materials in construction.

Some theme parks are stepping up to combat this problem. They are working to create initiatives that make the parks more environmentally friendly. These initiatives include both small and large measures. Some of the smaller measures are as simple as starting recycling campaigns on the theme park grounds. Guests at some parks throw away tons of garbage each day, much of which can be recycled. These campaigns are often as simple as providing ample recycling bins for guests to use and posting signs to educate the public. Many parks are also switching from plastic trash bags to biodegradable bags.

Another simple way that theme parks are becoming more green is by replacing existing infrastructure with more environmentally friendly materials. For example when old park benches and picnic tables rot or otherwise need replaced, the new ones might be made of recycled plastic lumber instead of new growth wood. These park benches and picnic tables are just as attractive as the old wooden ones, and have the added benefit of reusing old material. Theme parks are beginning to enact many larger measures as well. The majority of these initiatives are behind the scenes things that the average person would not know about simply by visiting the park. Most of these big, behind the scenes changes have to do with how the parks use energy and electricity. Several parks have started to switch from desil power trains to fuel made from used vegetable oil. This initiative alone saves thousands of gallons of fossil fuels each year. Another way that theme parks are saving energy is by switching the type of lights they use. Because the parks are often open late into the night, and must stay well lit for safety reasons, this is a big change. Many parks are switching from traditional light bulbs to compact florescent lights and LEDs. Both types of light use far less energy than their traditional counterparts, and last much longer.

Many theme parks have large resort areas, and this is another place where they are working to become more environmentally friendly. In their resorts they are switching to green cleaning fuels and allowing guests to choose how often to have their towels and linens changed. Theme parks are making a great effort to become more green.
