The Way To Behave Whenever You Come Across Cattle Whilst Walking

There is a fantastic film produced in the 1950s starring Alistair Sim (possibly most noted for his portrayal of Dickens Scrooge) named Folly to be Wise. It is set in a British army barracks in the 1950s where a recently appointed camp chaplain (Sim) attempts to liven the site up by organising a brains trust. A brains trust entailed assembling a group of local dignitaries and enabling the audience to ask them whatever may be on their minds, similar to what may be called a plenary session in a modern day business meeting.

The occasion is, however, doomed to failure when it ends in a fight amongst some of the dignitaries however my most favourite part surrounds a query from the audience that was Why is it that cows in a field run after trains? and the response from the rather batty Mistress of the Manor was in case babies fall out of the window. It isnt a tendency I have noticed personally and trains now almost certainly have baby proof windows. Even now, its obvious from looking at several walking and hiking blogs that cow conduct is a matter of keen interest to hikers.

Actually it is quite a serious issue and there's a really sad tale of a vet in the Yorkshire Dales who was trampled to death by a herd of cows in 2009. Lots of people are nervous of a herd of cows in a field as younger ones specifically may very well be fairly inquisitive, running right up to you and following closely when you stroll.

Things you should not do with cows:

1. Do not get in between a cow and it's calf. Cows are protective animals and will guard their young if they believe there is a risk. Standing or strolling between a cow and it's calves is best avoided by staying away from walking into the centre of a herd of cows if young calves are about. Cows typically make this simpler for the rambler by moving away from approaching ramblers, so long as they spot you in enough time.

2. Dont let your dog off it's leash close to cattle, and stay clear if someone else has done so. The noise and view of an unruly dog can cause a good deal of strain for cows, and might set the herd off into a stampede. If you have a dog and the cows get aggressive toward it, let the dog go. Ramblers with dogs have already been trampled to death while attempting to safeguard their dogs.

How to react if a group of farming stock is rushing toward you

A logical strategy is to spread out your arms and legs to make the greatest potential shape (if there are more than one of you, get together to create a greater outline). This might well halt the charge. If not then the next suggestion is to produce a loud noise at the farming stock are bearing down on you, and step aside (if possible) to allow them to cross to your side.
