The Way In Which My 1st Road Trip Opened Up My Eyes

By:

It was the summer of 1987. I had purchased my Honda 550-four a couple of summers earlier but had never taken a long journey with it. Personal circumstances and a lack of time meant that I had only ridden my motorbike to and from work and around the town. Even so , one Monday morning, bright and early, my brother phoned to ask if I would like to take a road trip with him. How could I refuse?

A half-hour later he was at my door asking if I was all set to go. He was there looking delighted with himself, complete with leather gloves and a new pair of riding glasses covering his eyes. I was wondering about his glasses and the way much he had paid for them and when he told me the price, I realized that he had paid a lot more than I would have done.

However, he did warn me that it was not a good suggestion to wear normal sunglasses when riding a bike but because I was young and knew it all, I ignored his advice.

And do you know what? He was right.

Without any riding glasses, I found it to be a real eye opener as I travelled along the highway at 65mph. Or should I say, an "eye closer"~In fact, I should really say that it was a real 'eye closer'~However, the reality is that it was more of an eye closer than an eye opener. Because I only had regular sunglasses on, I discovered that my eyes started to dry up pretty quickly as the wind found its way over the rims. On top of that, I found that bugs, pebbles as well as other debris were still getting me despite me wearing glasses.

Approximately the 50th mile I was begging the biker gods for a place to get off the interstate so I could purchase a pair of glasses.

Fortunately, prior to the day was out I had found somewhere and was now sporting a completely new pair of riding glasses. And if I ever planned to ride faster than 55mph again, I made sure I had these glasses with me. A year or two later, I sold my motorcycle and made a point of advising the buyer to purchase a good pair of riding glasses. I do not know if he ever did, but I can tell you that I sure hope he did not have to discover the hard way, like me.

If you're a enthusiastic motorcyclist then including biker rally shirt to supplement your riding gear is a must. Not to mention other accessories such as riding glasses. Motorcycling always can feel better somehow when you dress the part.
