A few years back, it was Sopranos or bust when you wanted to check out an original series on cable. Nowadays, the boys from Jersey would have some rivals to their all-out Badabing fest. The Mormons out in Utah on Big Love and the old school thugs in Boardwalk Empire can give a different view of gangster culture, one which is lighting up satellite TV networks and opening up a lot of eyes to the power of the medium. Here are the top original series playing on satellite TV.

Mad Men: Retro is definitely in, as Don Draper and the boys sip martinis, flirt with secretaries and generally engage in battle of will warfare. Were these guys really so hardboiled? By the looks of this excellent AMC HD show, they were. Get ready for a couple of two martini lunches whenever the show is airing. The producers have really handled the progression of the show well, leaving viewers and critics alike in awe. For how long can the Don Draper Era continue? The sky appears to be the limit, but well see in the coming years.

Hung: Aaron Eckhart is the star of Hung and is just the latest in an amazing run of movie stars who have taken roles on the small screen in hopes of getting consistent, intriguing work. With Hung, thats just what Eckhart gets. Hes not all that moralistic or sensitive, but his character gets the viewer on his side and sympathizing. After all, what else can we ask of our actors? If they can humanize characters who have an element of the despicable in them, they have done their job. Check out this hot new series on HBO in high definition.

Boardwalk Empire: Steve Buscemi has finally gotten the role he deserved in Enoch Nucky Thompson. Buscemi was born to play Nucky, and had martin Scorsese directing the first episode of this new HBO series. The Atlantic City boardwalk was lovingly recreated on the Brooklyn waterfront, leaving the old Jersey location out, but not in sprit. The saltwater taffy shops and curiosities of the old boardwalk pay a major role in the series, if the ocean and beach do not. The series is really a well-crafted period mobster piece with one of the most original gangsters ever seen. If the real Nucky was as unique as they say, he must have been some figure in the Prohibition Era.

Big Love: You cant ask for a much better cast than you get in Bog Love, another HD series under the HBO banner. Youve got Bill Paxton, Chloe Sevigny, Harry Dean Stanton, Bruce Dern, Grace Zabriskie and more. The story is as fascinating as anyone could hope for. Paxton lives with his three wives in urban Utah, trying to reconcile his beliefs with the modern world. It might be a more sensitive version of polygamy, but the writers and producers ask a lot of interesting questions along the way. Watch the intrigue unfold with every episode.
