Once you have read this article you will be ready to begin the training of your dog, and teach him how to sit.

Before I proceed with the article on how to teach a dog to sit, there is a few important facts on dogs, which I wish to let you in on. This will help you gain a better understanding on how a dog thinks. If you gain a better knowledge on how your dog thinks, it will be much easier for you to teach your dogs new tricks.

When a dog is busy with the investigation of new smells, the rest of its body is being run by the dogs instincts. We are going to make good use of this knowledge later on in our training. A dog is also easily distracted, and you should always make sure that you and your dog are in a calm and well-known area, before you start any training. This is very crucial when working with younger dogs, as they are more energetic than adult dogs.

Let us begin with the tips on how to teach a dog to sit.

Stand up and face your dog! Hold a goody in either one of your hands.

Let the dog see and smell the goody and then steer the hand with the treat over the dogs head and towards his tail.

Your dog will be to busy with the goody to think about what his body does, so he will instinctively begin to sit down, in order to follow the treat that is passing over his head.

When the dog enters a sitting position, you must say "Sit" with a clear voice, and then reward the dog with the goody and kind praises in a gentle tone.

You then repeat this lesson for 5 to 7 times, but no more than that.

The lesson can be done up to ten times a day, but make sure that you spread it out evenly, so your dog will not grow tired with the training. If you follow this method, you should normally see good results within no more than a week or so. As the dog slowly gets better at the command, you must stop using treats. You should also begin to do the training in new surroundings in order to increase the difficulty of the training.

Good luck with the training.
