The process is simple, on your end. The process on the printers end may require a little more technical know how, so lucky you, you dont have to do anything technical. Let your commercial printer do all the technical work while you relax and wait for your commercial printing results.

1) Have a general and clear goals of what prints you really need before you meet your printer.

2) Have you thought of your target users/readers/viewers? Start thinking about them.

3) Start searching for your printer
Your search for your printer is the most important step whether you are following a simple process or a lengthy one. Your printers will be the one to make your dream design into actual realized prints, so if you find one that will create lousy prints that did not meet your expectations then you just might have lost a lot of money in the long run. Remember that your prints will reflect you so you need to find a printer that can produce great results all the time. A few characteristics printers of great quality posses are:

Fast turnaround time

Gives Competitive prices and packages

Shares knowledge

Always ready to assist

Prints quality prints all the time

4) Start your designing -
When designing your art, always think about your target users and use them as a source of inspiration. You can use several popular design programs like illustrator, Corel Draw or Photoshop or better yet ask your printer what programs they use and try to use the same thing they do so you can easily seek assistance if you need it and you can save the file to what they open.

5) Items you need to check on before you submit the file to your printer:

Art file type -
File types vary from printer to printer, ask them what they want. Not all the files can be opened by the printers so if you do not follow what they request, you just might be seeing your file returned to you for conversion. Files that are most likely to be recommended by your printers are pdf, eps, tiff or JPG.

Font file -
You have a the main file but you must also have a font file together with your file. Imbed the font file to your art file to be sure your printer will be able to access that particular font you chose and the design will not have to be altered in any way.

Colors -
Printers use CMYK or Panatone Colors, what you see on your screen on the other hand is RGB which is lesser so either you use CMYK to design or have it converted or have your printer match the same colors (expect additional fees).

Resolutions -
To get clear prints you need a resolution higher than 300dpi. The bigger the prints the bigger the resolution you may need. Ask your printers what would work well with your print requirements.

Print marks -
Make sure you follow the caution lines to keep your text and images safe from being cut. Your caution line is at least 1/8th inch from your trim line.

Commercial printing is an important process that must be done by people who really know what they are doing your chosen commercial printer must know what to do so you can get the right results, so make sure you get the right one.
