The Signs Are All Around Us

By:

Just imagine that you're driving into town and you see in huge lettering "Johnson City."
Right now you might be thinking, "I'm following your directions and imagining, but I still don't understand why that's such a big deal." It's a huge deal because just by reading that sign, you now know precisely where you are.

Have you ever thought of what this world would be like without signs? Sure you could probably make it from your house to the local grocery store and back, but it would be terrifying to go into unfamiliar territory because you could never be sure exactly where you were.

I had my own experience with this when I came back from a vacation in Canada and realized that I had left my glasses there somewhere. I'm not required to wear glasses when I drive because my vision isn't that bad. In other words, you don't need to get off the streets in fear that I'm going to run you over, but I do have a hard time reading signs from a distance.

It was amazing how much I missed the ability to read signs when I lost my glasses. It was frustrating even when I was driving around the city where I live. They say you don't realize what you've got until it's gone, and for me that certainly was the case. It turns out that I don't know my home as well as I originally thought. Without being able to read signs, I quickly lost of how far I had gone while driving.

As human beings I think we have a certain kind of need to be oriented about our surroundings. Have you ever been in a room without a clock for a long period of time? Did you get a little restless about not knowing how long you'd been there? It can become completely nerve racking not knowing exactly where you are and what time it is.

I guess that's where those signs at the bank that show you the time and temperature come in really handy. Who ever invented those was a genius. All in one sign you have the location, time, and an idea of whether you need to wear your jacket when you get out of the car or not.

You would be shocked if you were to keep track of how many signs you read in just one day. Even if you spent the day hiking in the woods, I bet you saw at least one sign. If you spent the day driving around town, you were reading signs all day. Next time you see signs in Johnson City, take a moment to think about where you would be without them.
