The reason most people have so much difficulty getting rid of their love handles and belly fat in general is because they are going about it the wrong way. This is because they focus on crunches and sit ups and exercises that target the abdominal muscles. However, and here is the secret that no one seems to know, the only way to get rid of love handles is to reduce your overall body fat percentage. And exercises that concentrate on your love handles just do not burn enough calories to do this.

It may seem counterintuitive, however we are going to get rid of your love handles by doing exercises that do not target your love handles at all because it is a matter of decreasing overall body fat percentage and not spot reducing fat.

Now, people usually fall into the trap of burning fat by doing lots of cardio. This is fine but, when you consider that you can spend an hour on the Stairmster and only burn 500 calories (I know) and that a pound of fat requires 33,500 calories to burn you will realize that there has got to be a better way.

Again, it may seem counterintuitive because you can obviously burn more calories in a half hour of running than you can in lifting weights. However, lifting weights helps build muscle and the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn. This is because muscle weighs more than fat and the body must work harder to carry the muscle so you will be burning fat at a higher rate even in your sleep.

But the types of exercises you do make a big difference too. Do not do exercises that isolate specific muscles. Do exercises that work many muscles at the same time such as the clean and jerk, the dumb bell snatch, pull ups, chin ups, dead lifts, squats and others. This is because these exercises will cause your body to go into a metabolic shock that causes you to burn fat at a higher rate for days.

Now, if you combine these exercises into a circuit where you are moving from one to the other with only a brief period of rest in between you will increase your metabolism even more. This is referred to as high intensity interval training and studies have show this to be the most effective way to lose fat. You will be working out for a shorter period of time that you did but at a much higher intensity and you will actually start seeing the results you want.
