The Ninja Turtles Return To Live Action

By:

In 1984, two broke comic book artists named Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created a decidedly goofy group of characters as a parody of the type of comic books that were being published at the time. Those characters were Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael, collectively known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The comic book was initially a cult favorite, with the first issue being very difficult to find. By 1987, the turtles had their own television series, and the turtles were soon taking the country by storm.

The turtles were featured in toys, comics, video games, and other products, and in 1990, with assistance from Jim Henson's creature shop, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were brought to life on the big screen in a live action film adaptation. The film only helped to further the popularity of the characters. But as the years rolled by, the turtles' popularity was starting to die down a little bit, but not to the point that they lost their fan base. The turtles would sporadically make appearances on TV and in comic books. The turtles made a brief return to popularity in 2003 when a new animated series debuted. The turtles were back in the spotlight.

In 2007 a new film was released, this one being animated called, simply, TMNT. The movie was, however, completely computer animated. It was well received, but the primary complaint that echoed through every review was that the turtles needed to return to live action. And in June 2009 it was revealed that fans will soon get their wish. A new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie has been announced. The film is intended to tell the complete origin of the four heroes in a half shell. It is currently unknown who the director will be.

The film is expected to take full advantage of the latest technologies in makeup and motion capture for animation. The story itself is of particular note, as the origin of the characters has only ever been briefly dealt with, but never fully revealed. It is expected that a big budget live action adaptation will serve the characters much better than the considerably lower budget 1990 film, although that film was very well received in its own right. There is currently no news about a release date for the film, although an announcement may be made at the San Diego Comic Con to coincide with the TMNT's twenty fifth anniversary.
