The Nightmare On Elm Street Lives On

In recent years, Hollywood has resorted to remaking a good deal of well known franchises. Almost every major franchise is getting either a reboot or a remake. This is especially true among the horror genre, as studios have been revamping, rebooting, and remaking some of the most iconic and popular horror franchises around. They have done it for Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Hills Have Eyes, and are now seeking to turn one of the most iconic horror films into a remake. That movie is A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street focused on teenagers who were being murdered in their dreams by supernatural serial killer Fred, or as he later became affectionately known by fans, Freddy Kruger. The film was wildly popular, but a criticism was that the sequels that inevitably followed it were nowhere near as good as the original. This is why the reboot is a big deal among the fans of the series. However, not all fans are enthusiastic over the remake due to the creator of the series, Wes Craven, not being invited as a creative consultant for the film.

Fans were also further angered when it was announced that the original portrayer of Kruger, Robert Englund, would not be reprising his role, nor would he have a cameo. However, Englund has stated that he is looking forward to the new film and is hoping that the new film lives up and even transcends the original. Fans anger, however, may have been quieted when it was announced that acclaimed actor Jackie Earle Haley would be taking up the clawed glove and striped sweater of the character.

The new film will follow the same basic premise of the original. Fred Kruger is a man who is killed by fire from an angry mob of parents who believe he has been hurting and killing children in the area. Years later, the teenagers of Elm Street begin to have nightmares about Fred, as he kills them. However, there is rumored to be a plot twist that could dramatically change audience perception of the character. The rumored plot twist is that it is possible Freddy might have been innocent of the crimes, and that he was used as a scapegoat by the children at the daycare he worked at to cover up abuse coming from their own parents.

A Nightmare on Elm Street will open in 2010.
