The Next Generation Of Mobile Technology

By:

3G is the 3rd Generation of standards for mobile phones and telecommunication technology. 3G service offers high-speed access to data and voice technology. The service is far more advanced as compared to 1G and 2G networks with regards to multimedia applications like video and broadband services.

3G services are based on standards developed by the International Telecommunications Union, known as the IMT-2000 criteria.

The first launch of a commercial 3G network was by a Japanese company called NTT DoCoMo in October 2001.This network was to a certain extent limited in scope and was not broadly available. The region found competition in 2002 when two Korean companies launched 3G networks.

Europe and the United States followed close after Asia to launch their 3G services. By June 2007, the number of 3G subscribers worldwide crossed the 200million mark. And this number is increasing daily.

3G services are more appealing than its predecessors - 1G and 2G because of the bandwidth and location information now available to 3G devices. This has given rise to a number of applications that were not previously available to mobile phone users.

Mobile-to-mobile voice transfer is the key component to 3G service. Three layers of information are sent in this process. The actual voice information is the first layer. The second layer is a control transmission which keeps the quality high. Basic connection information that prevents dropped calls makes up the last layer.

With 3G technology a service provider can redirect TV signals directly onto a 3G enabled mobile device. This allows the user to have access to television on his mobile phone.

Video conferencing which is a very important communication tool in business as well as personal use is made easier through 3G networks. These networks enable high-speed video as well as audio streaming that make video conferencing more convenient.

Location based services are also made possible using 3G technology. It enables the user to receive regular localized weather as well as traffic updates directly to his phone. Through these services, the user can also have access to information about local businesses and find friends in the vicinity.

In India, 3G mobile and data services were first launched by a government owned telephone service provider in 2008. As of March 2010, 3G services are available in over 13 different cities in India. A Nation-wide auction of 3G wireless spectrum was announced in April 2010. This auction found participation from a number of private companies that are expected to launch their 3G services by the end of 2010.

In addition to mobile phone communications, 3G data cards are also available to enable high speed internet connectivity. These data cards enable internet speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. They are available as USB connectors as well as PCMIA/Express cards.
