The Mountainous Molehill

The Mountainous Molehill

The ego and mind are treacherous machines run amuck. Between them, they can take a simple memory or theme and create such a torturous scenario that it would require the tenacity and courage of a K2 ascent, to disarm it. Actually, the mind itself is simply an automaton which endlessly spews forth thoughts, over which we have no control. It is the ego which fuels and feeds on the emotional charge of the deluge.

There are various descriptions as to the nature of the ego, whether it be Freud's three part structure, David Hawkins' evolved and overdeveloped amoebae's probe or Adyashanti's circuitous thinking pattern. They all point to it as the source of our unbalanced thinking and behavior.Sometimes the memory is a simple one which the inner child has assigned undue meaning to. The child panics and builds up a wall to keep the memory contained, resisting all attempts at dislodgment. Meanwhile, other children experience the most horrendous things and grow up able to move through life's challenges. What determines who will have the courage to face their inner demons and who will not is combination of Karmic inheritance, life experiences and the surrounding social structure during childhood.

What prompted this article, was waking during a dream /remembering of a past event which I regretted, and watching the ego dramatize it as if it were a horrendous moral issue. All that was required was a simple regret and the acknowledgement that I am no longer the same person I was twenty five years ago; that's all. This was the Super Ego's role as the punitive parent, that I had caught, as it was attempting to catch me unaware.

There is a seemingly endless array of memories which the mind has at its disposal in order to keep me in its grip. If I allow it, they will fester under the surface distracting me from my goal of the freedom of self realization. I have been delving into the healing arts for over twenty years now, seeking better, more efficient ways to release the limitations which lie buried deep within the confines of the body/mind. They manifest in myriad ways from physical ailments, to relationship issues to sabotage of our life's endeavors. The one thing they have in common is that they all require a certain level of commitment and the willingness to face them in order to move beyond them.

History is filled with countless stories of those who faced their inner demons (dark night of the soul) on their quest towards Divine Union. Yes, there were those whose simple faith lifted them through their journey, but that was not the fate of Padre Pio and Mother Theresa to name but a few. Even Jesus had his moment of torment as he faced his ultimate challenge.

That is not to say that our secret burdens are not as horrendous as those who came before. They most certainly are, and yet we must all somehow find the grit and determination to move beyond them. The funny thing is that many of them turn out to be blown up way out of proportion. We may look back at our attempts of avoidance with mirth at our resistance, but in the moment they are the depths of hell.

The wise sages have left us a handful of tools with which to work. There is the path of negation though self inquiry; the classic response of Netti,Netti, not this, not that, to all that surfaces in reply to the question of "Who or What am I?" For the spontaneous thoughts such as my midnight memory, there is the response of "So what" which may be alternated or combined with "And then what". One can simply let everything arise and let it run, like standing in the surf at the beach. Various healing modalities address this quandary by working at releasing the cellular memories connected to specific events or issues. These are all valid tools and one can pick and choose at will. If none appeal to your taste, then by all means create your own. We may go kicking and screaming, nonetheless the shadow's play must be traversed if we are to reach the freedom of self realization.
