The Most Important Aspects Of Cleaning Hardwood Floorings

By:

When talking about cleaning wood floors, there are several tips if followed would give your hardwood floors long lasting life.

There are essentially daily cleaning, 3-monthly care and preventive maintenance.

Daily cleaning

It is of utmost importance to know that every day certain amount of dirt and grit is brought into your home by the shoes. The floors will accumulate more dirt for larger families. More often than not the dirt is deposited at the entrance of the main door and in the kitchen.
Sweeping the floor with a soft broom should be done. If the sand is not cleaned away it will finally scratch the floors and eventually make the surface become dull. Do this on a daily basis or on alternate days. For better results a vacuum floor cleaner should be used. However be sure to follow the manufacturers procedures and use the appropriate bristles or accessories.
One of the biggest enemies of hardwood floor is water Any liquid that is not cleaned away as soon as possible will seep through the flooring and this will cause warping.

Quarterly cleaning

Daily cleaning would not effectively remove the accumulated grease. You should clean the floor with commercially available cleaners once every three months. Always remember to follow the manufacturers instructions when using a chemical cleaner. Never clean the wood floors with normal soap solutions or vinegar solution if you do not want your floors to get scratched over the long term.
Nowadays many hardwood floors are coated with polyurethane finish which is glossy in nature. In such case you might need to buff the floors with wax. Here the same rule still applies: follow the vendors recommended procedures.

Preventive maintenance

In order to protect the wood floors from major damage, prevention is better than cure:

1. Make it a habit not to pull heavy objects on the flooring

2. Always use protective pads under the legs of table or chairs to prevent scratching
3. Certain shoes such as high heels or shoes with spikes should not be worn when inside the house

4. Additional carpets or floor mats could be placed in high traffic areas at the kitchen and main door areas

5. Make it a habit to wipe off spills the moment they occur

With the above pointers and regular cleaning schedule and using the suitable cleaner solutions (according to vendors instructions) will protect your wood floor investment in many years to come.
