In today's competitive market there are many ways to approach marketing your business in an effective manner. One of the oldest methods utilized in sales which are still being utilized today is door to door sales. Companies like MXenergy and the well known vacuum cleaner Kirby are still using this time tried method. Now this is not to say that Kirby and MXenergy are not using other methods of marketing like an internet presence in the form of a website and social media like the ever popular Facebook.

Kirby has been going door to door since their inception 90 years ago and still continues this practice today. MXenergy along with several other energy companies like TXU has taken the old fashioned approach. By using a sales force that makes house calls which is a great way to put a friendly face to associate with their company right at your door step. I believe this is where this type of marketing strategy is superior to other mediums which are less personal like Facebook or an internet site that provides the company with an online presence.
Now in today's age it is hard to operate a successful business without the benefit of a website. More and more people are going to the internet to do their shopping as well as getting information on the companies that they do business with. The World Wide Web in the last 10 years has really affected how marketing is done in the information age. As we continue to go down this path the internet has become a medium that is dominating marketing more and more. I think the downside to it all is that business has become less personal but therefore more convenient in exchange, which makes me wonder when the MXenergy and Kirby's of the world will cease their door to door campaigns and strictly use more modern mediums like telemarketing, and the internet to sell as well as make the public aware of their company's philosophy.

Telemarketing and email spam are probably the most annoying methods of marketing in our daily lives. I don't know of anyone that looks forward to that telemarketer calling their home after a long day of work of sifting thru emails with various unwanted ads to get to your pertinent emails sent to you by colleagues, family and friends. Telemarketing as well as email spamming techniques despite all the annoyance are readily and successfully used today by a great variety of companies in varying industries.

You will find that reputable businesses will not spam you and will adhere to the rules and only send you email about their products if you opt in to a mailing list. Telemarketing however is widely used by all industries that can sell their service over the phone. Companies like ATT, Comcast, MXEnergy, Reliant Energy, and Clear all use some form of this type of marketing. Other types of industries like pre paid legal, discount insurance programs and the like are also very fond of this type of marketing.

Lastly direct mail marketing is still widely used by a large variety of industries. As we all know your mail box is still full of flyers and catalogs as well as important looking envelopes from credit card companies and even the occasional coupon book just to get you to give those businesses a try. This medium much like spam email relies heavily on volume and repetition in order to get a marginal return. However they are still being used by companies as part of a balanced marketing strategy.
