The Joys Of Bird Feeders And Wildlife Gardens

By:

If you're a nature lover, or simply enjoy sitting at your window and watching the birds gather outside, there are several types of bird feeders in Vermont for you to choose from. What kind of feeder you need to get, depends on what kind of birds you wish to see. Most feeders are the kind that dispense seeds, but for feathered friends of the hummingbird variety, you will need one that dispenses liquid.

Feeders that hold solid food such as seeds or peanuts, are often used to attract a variety of different kinds of birds. Black oil sunflower seeds are among the favorites of most seed eating birds. Birds in the crow family, such as Blue Jays seem to prefer being fed corn.

No matter what kind of feeder you choose, or birds you wish to attract, it will take a while for your feathered friends to find their new feeding station, so you shouldn't fill it completely full of food until you start seeing more of them starting to show up. Once they start to show up, you should make sure the station is kept stocked full of food at all times.

You should also make sure that there is a water supply nearby. If you put up a bird-bath, not only will they be able to get a drink of water, they will also be able to bathe. Birds love to take baths and a bathing station can often bring just as many birds as a feeding station will.

There have been claims that providing birds with food upsets the balance of the natural world, but this doesn't stop people from wanting to lend a helping hand to the creatures of the wild. Before you begin, you may want to check with the city you live in to make sure it's legal to set up a station. In some places it is illegal to feed certain birds. Pigeons can become a problem in some areas and compete with other species for food.

Another of the controversies is that this kind of activity leads to more deaths of these flying creatures, due to being attacked and eaten by cats, hit by cars, or killed by people in the neighborhood who see them as pests. There may also be an increased risk of death by the spread of disease. So many birds being gathered in one place can have negative impacts on their health. If you have a station set up or are planning to have one, you must make sure to keep it clean and sanitary, to help prevent the spread of disease.

Where there are stations that offer seeds and nuts, squirrels are sure to make an appearance. There are guards you can buy to put around the station and there are stations that you can buy that are already designed to keep these little rodents out. You can also try putting red pepper on the food. This won't hurt the birds, but might make the squirrels think twice about stealing food.

In addition to or in place of bird feeders, you might want to consider making a wildlife garden. In this garden you can plant all kinds of different plants that attract many different kinds of animals, including birds. You can build a little pond, plant lots of flowers for butterflies and bees to visit and enjoy a variety of different animals who make their way into your backyard.
