Designer jeans prove exceptionally popular, particularly amongst a certain type of person: those with money. Many people judge others on appearance, and sometimes, do not give others there time if they deem them to be wearing the wrong clothes.

Certain people within our society, namely the upwardly mobile, confident, self-conscious, youth, give a high degree of credence to the clothes we wear. Amongst these newly created yuppies, branding (be it on the laptop you use, the car you drive, or the clothing you wear) is viewed as a mark of social standing. Tribalism is the name of the game within this yuppie culture, and they know perfectly who is in, and who is out.

The idea that jeans can mark out a person's high social status seems ironic: slaves originally wore jeans during the early years of the new Americas. They were seen as the uniform of the workers, not the leaders, as they are today. Today, however, designer jeans do signify prosperity, a pair of G star jeans, for instance, can fetch as much as 150, some people's weekly wage in the UK. Of course, such designer jeans are worth the money, they are stylish, well designed, fashionable, and attractive. However, it is just unfortunate that they are beyond the reach of some people's budgets.

The way in which we view jeans as a society evolves throughout the ages. So, when they were first introduced, they were considered workers apparel, then, more than 100 years later, Hollywood transformed the connotations associated with jeans into one of rebellion, with films such as 'Rebel Without a Cause'. Later, they became associated with the hippy movements of the 1960s, with the bell-bottomed and flared varieties. Today, they are considered the everyday casual norm, while at the same time, reflecting social status.

Moreover, the social status reflected from each designer pair of jeans is different. While one designer may try to create an elite following from the music world, another may try to create a following from the celebrity world. Additionally, one of the key factors that make a jean truly elite pertains to the number of people who have heard of the brand. For instance, Humor jeans are relatively new, and are very little known, except amongst the leading fashionable celebrities, this makes these jeans highly sought after, as anyone who wears them may be considered a leader in the fashion stakes - a person everyone inspires to be. However, on the other hand, brands such as Levi's, which are quite expensive, but very well known, carry no connotations of being elite, they have become so mainstream, that they can no longer be considered as cool.
