The History Of The Mahindra Automobile Company

By:

Many people may not even know that India has an automobile industry, but it does. For over 60 years, one company in particular has been developing its own line of utility vehicles. Read on to find out more about the history of Mahindra & Mahindra.

In the early 1940's, K.C Mahindra came to the United States from India on business. While in America he met Barney Roos, who was the inventor of the Jeep: the ultimate all-terrain vehicle at that time.

The Jeep's rugged design truly had the capacity to change the way America could motor, but it was primarily used as a military vehicle during the Second World War and was not available to the general public. Mahindra saw the Jeep as ideal not just for war, but also for navigating the tough, dirt packed, rutted roads of rural India.

On October 2, 1945, K.C Mahindra and his brother took a big leap and set up a franchise for Jeep assembly in their own country, and the Mahindra group was born. The business soon expanded to include the production of high quality tractors to benefit India's agricultural economy, and then produced light utility vehicles of its own. Today, the company generates over 6.7 billion dollars yearly with its many enterprises.

Mahindra & Mahindra began production of passenger vehicles in 2007, and its automotive division features 20 different models. Its multi-utility vehicles, such as the Scorpio and its own version of the Jeep, get their inspiration from the original capabilities of the classic Jeep which inspired the company's beginnings over 60 years ago.

In order to meet the demand for its automobile products, Mahindra & Mahindra purchased manufacturing plants in both China and the United Kingdom, and operates three assembly plants in in the continental United States. The success of its cars in India led the company to begin exporting its products abroad in Egypt, Brazil, and now in America.

Mahindra vehicles developed a new breed of diesel engines: common rails, which are cleaner than their predecessors. They emit 97% fewer sulfur emissions than old types of diesel engines. The company also claims that they are also nearly sooty particulate free, producing 30% fewer greenhouse gases than gasoline engines.

Mahindra is offering three models to the American market: its SUV, as well as 2-door and 3-door pickup trucks. All vehicles feature clean burning high fuel efficiency diesel engines, and feature the solid construction and quality engineering that has made Mahindra famous and successful in other parts of the world.
