The city of Pasadena is located in Californias Los Angeles County and offers a picturesque backdrop in which to enjoy a laidback west coast holiday. The citys name translates to Crown of the Valley and it is home to many places of interest including the Rose Bowl Stadium which is a massive outdoor venue that hosts the famous Rose Bowl game.
The history of the Rose Bowl Stadium dates back to 1897 when the city bought a sizeable amount of land in the area known as Arroyo Seco. Needing a venue with a bigger capacity in order to host the college football games that took place during the New Year, the city began construction on the new stadium. Named the "Rose Bowl" by Harlan W. Hall who was a police reporter at the time, the new stadium had a capacity for around 57,000 spectators and hosted its first game on October 28th in 1922 which saw the University of Southern California Trojans going up against the University of California Bears.
Named as a National Historic Landmark, the Rose Bowl Stadium is most noted for hosting the annual Rose Bowl game featuring the top two American college football teams. Popularly known as the "The Granddaddy of Them All", the game is usually held on January 1st except when it falls on a Sunday which results in it being played the following day.
With a seating capacity of over 90,000 the current stadium has also been used as a venue to host such sporting events as the NFL Super Bowl, the men's 1994 soccer World Cup, the womens 1999 soccer World Cup and BCS National College Football Championship Games. Other events at the stadium include a magnificent Fourth of July celebration with live performances and fireworks and a flea market that is held on the 2nd Sunday of every month and which is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
