Known as the highest peak in the world, the Himalayas are a beauty to behold. The name Himalaya is derived from the ancient language of Sanskrit, and can be translated to mean abode of snow. Dividing India from Tibet, the mountains that come together to make up the range have their own names. Zanskar, Ladakh, Dhaula, Pir Panjal and East Korakoram are some of the main ranges to be mentioned. The mountains were said to have formed about 30 to 50 million years ago.
Many rivers start from the magnificent mountains, of which approximately 3 billion people are recorded to receive sustenance from it. Some of the notable rivers that begin its flow from the Himalayas are the Ganges River, Yangtze River, Red River, Indus River and Yellow River. Countries such as Pakistan, India, Tibet, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia survive off the rivers that flow from these ranges.
The diversity of climates that can be experienced includes a tropical environment at the base of the mountains to ice and snow at the top, and just about everything else in between. The varying plant, animal and bird life also changes with the altitude levels.
Trekking to the summit of the Himalayas takes preparation and time, but those who are looking to skim the lower parts will find it an easy task. Warm clothes can be bought as you enter the region. There are several ways to reach the higher plains of the mountain, some may prefer the traditional approach and hire the use of a Sherpa to climb to the top. Whilst there is another option of taking a motorbike, which will help you cover larger areas faster. And those who can afford it may simply hire a helicopter and reach the summit, however permits are required.
