Many endangered species of corals such as Acropora formosa, Acropora hyachinths, Acropora robusta are seen in this sanctuary. The corals are best seen when there is bright sunlight. Visitors will also find five species of angel fish and twelve species of butterfly fish in the reefs. They are also home to many types of exotic coral fishes, lobsters, large turtles and microscopic marine creatures. Many hotels in Hikkaduwa are built a few metres away from these reefs, and allow guests to simply walk and wade through them.
