The Highly Misunderstood Thyroid Gland

The Highly Misunderstood Thyroid Gland

By:

The Thyroid gland is the butterfly shaped endocrine gland that is located in the front of the neck. When the thyroid gland doesn't function properly, it can cause a lot of trouble in the body. This important gland is responsible for regulating metabolism, energy levels, organ function and memory. It is known to be commonly overlooked when a patient visits their doctor complaining of weight gain, fatigue and depression. The test that is standard for checking thyroid function will often return a normal result and therefore leave the patient frustrated dealing with their symptoms.

With over 27 million Americans having this debilitating disorder, there are many people still suffering undiagnosed and untreated despite visiting their doctor. Because this disorder is so prevalent, the misdiagnosis or many times worse, non-diagnosis from many doctors today is alarming.

Further studies aimed at determining the cause of thyroid dysfunction are finding that the under or over active thyroid itself is a symptom of what is actually an auto-immune disease. Hashimoto's Disease in when the immune system slowly attacks the thyroid. The standard of practice, and therefore most common treatment is to give the patient extra thyroid hormones. This treatment is not enough, as the cause of the disorder that causes thyroid dysfunction must be corrected first and foremost. It is sad that many health care professionals do not fully understand the thyroid, its functions or diseases and what needs to be done to correct it in order to restore the proper amount of hormone that it secretes.

Bigger problems and conditions such as diabetes can also be brought on as a result of the thyroid's imbalance. The A1C Test, which is a test designed to measure blood glucose levels, should be given along with the proper thyroid test as well. The correlation between the two illnesses is not to be ignored, as they are both endocrine disorders and can exacerbate and effect each other adversely.

Do not accept when you are told that nothing is wrong by your physician even though you know that you still do not feel right. Even when tests say that you are perfectly healthy. It is rarely all in your head and often there is much to worry about. Try to remember that there are millions of others being told the same thing. Being that there are frequent misunderstanding of this important gland by health care professionals today, you should not leave you suffering in silence. Be sure that the physician you are seeing is experienced in successfully treating auto-immune diseases.
