The Harmful Influence Of The Computer Viruses

By:

A computer virus is a special kind of computer program which spreads across disks and networks by making copies of it, usually surreptitiously and can produce undesired side-effects in computers in which it is active. Viruses usually ensure that this happens by behaving like a parasite, i.e. by modifying another item so that the virus code is executed when the legitimate item is run or opened.
These effects can range from harmless messages to data corruption or destruction. Infections spread from machine to machine, and from organization to organization, in a number of ways. Computer viruses are programs written by "mean" people. These virus programs are placed into a commonly used program so that program will run the attached virus program as it boots, therefore, it is said that the virus "infects" the executable file or program. Viruses work the same ways in Windows or DOS machines by infecting zip or exe files. A virus is inactive until you execute an infected program or application OR start your computer from a disk that has infected system files. Once a virus is active, it loads into your computer's memory and may save itself to your hard drive or copies itself to applications or system files on disks you use. Many viruses do nothing more than display a message or make sounds / verbal comments at a certain time or a programming event after replicating themselves to be picked up by other users one way or another. Sadly many people who have problems or frequent crashes using their computers do not realize that they have a virus and live with the inconveniences. Slowing your computer down are amongst the many other effects. Some viruses are self-reproducing programs designed to move from computer to computer. Many are intended to be malicious but some cause no harm. Boot-sector viruses are transmitted from machine to machine on infected floppies. Attempting to boot a machine from an infected diskette, even if the process is unsuccessful can spread the virus. Most common viruses are spread by email, sharing files over the Internet or by moving floppy disks from one computer to another. Anything that can be done with a computer (creating files, deleting files, hacking) a virus can do to the computer it is in. Depending on the virus coding, it can be from anything stupid like shutting down your computer (a simple bug) to something damaging like sabotage your hard drive. A virus can fall into one or more of the above categories and "Brain" was a boot sector and a stealth virus. Today probably all anti-virus software can detect most of the early viruses and some of these, including "Brain" are now extinct in the wild. Computer viruses are not unlike biological viruses. Their effectiveness is ultimately dependent on an ability to survive and spread. If a virus is too destructive it may quickly disappear, as its computer host will then be unable to infect other systems. Try installing antivirus software since they have the ability to track this menace and eliminate them before they fully corrupt your system and files.
