The Guitar-a Family Tradition

By:

When I was a little kid, I had this older cousin who lived in Phoenix who would come to visit every summer. He was a pretty cool guy, with a van, long hair, and an incredible skill with the guitar. I can still see him in my grandma's driveway, sitting in his van with the side door open, leaning back, and playing Spanish tunes on his guitar. He worked part time and temporary jobs so he could have the freedom to come and go as he pleased. We all thought he was so cool, and we loved to be seen riding around with him in his van.

That was a really long time ago. My cousin has lost his hair, sold his van, and moved from Phoenix to Los Angeles. He now works for one of the bigger search engine companies, but he still plays his guitar. His skill has only deepened with age, and now the tunes he plays have the added benefit of age and experience. When he plays, it's not only fun; now you can feel the pain or the joy that comes from the artist himself.

Because of those experiences, I have always loved both acoustic and electric guitars, and I especially love acoustic electric guitars. The instrument itself is timeless, and examples of the guitar and its close relatives have been depicted in stories and art through the centuries. Folk music, country and western, '80's hair bands, 90's New Wave, and practically every contemporary form relies on the guitar to make their music work. It's portability and style will always keep this musical instrument at the forefront of every band.

My cousin still visits in the summer, and we still listen to him play. Other members of the family have the skill with the guitar and just about every other musical instrument, so family reunions become regular jam sessions. I think my grandmother must be proud, where she is now, as she hears our music playing, knowing that la musica keeps our family together. Surely, there must be guitars in Heaven.
