The Guiding Principles Of Nebosh Health And Safety

By:

Although the word 'NEBOSH' sounds like a particularly effective wrestling manoeuvre, it is actually an acronym for the highly regarded National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. NEBOSH health and safety has been awarding people around the UK with certificates as well as diplomas in matters of health, safety and environmental matters since 1979.

NEBOSH health and safety courses are taken around the world - in fact in 65 countries. While Nebosh do not actually teach those seeking these accreditations, it does accredit the organisations with the authority to teach them. It is a public body overseen by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority of England.

Occupational health is a wide subject and can cover many aspects of the working environment. Both the World Health organisation and the International Labour Organization have recognised the importance of occupational health since 1950.

It has revised the meaning of it 12 times, but the current version emphasises the importance of a safe working environment for workers. It maintains that no process or aspect of working life should be detrimental to the worker. It also states that industrial processes should not negatively impact on persons outside the workplace - for example, from pollution or hazards caused by the working environment. Nebosh health and safety courses help ensure these concepts are widespread.

There are 3 basic principles which back up the such an ethos - supported by Nebosh Health and Safety too. The first is Moral - that a worker should not feel or be in any danger whilst doing their job. The second is economic; the financial costs to the state would be much higher if the workplace is a dangerous place - namely social security costs from people injured from a hazardous workplace.

The third is legal. This aspect has no doubt become a more prominent reason for better health and safety over the years - something which NEBOSH health and Safety also takes into consideration. Failure to ensure that workers have an adequately safe working environment can result in legal procedures. Fire safety, an absence of physical dangers such as heavy objects falling on workers, heavy lifting risks, adequate heating (or cooling if necessary), suitable seating; these are just some of the many aspects to this wide subject - all of which get covered by Nebosh health and safety courses.

There are also related courses in risk management, which teach people to identify potential risks in a working environment - or indeed any environment - and prioritise those risks. Students would also learn how to minimise the effects of identified risks. Risk management should directly address uncertainty in all its potentially threatening forms.

These courses are provided by various independent teaching organisations around the UK and indeed the world. It is wise to research the institution before paying for such a course - perhaps finding the feedback of past students is a good idea. Some Nebosh Health and Safety courses are cheaper than others, but arguably those may have a lower standing in the education and training environment and so quality should be a bigger aim, rather than price.
