The Fees Will Get You

By:

Renting a car can be a tricky venture. There are a number of "fine lines" that you need to read and understand before you drive the rental car off the lot. If you are in a rush, not reading or following these guidelines could end up costing you a pretty penny.

One of the biggest fees that rental companies get is a refueling charge. If you think that gas prices are high when you go to your neighborhood gas station then just turn in your rental car with anything but a full tank and see what it costs you. Many rental companies charge over eight dollars a gallon when they have to do your work for you.

Rental car companies will have to cut back though - at least in the Baltimore/Washington International area. The attorney general's office in Maryland has cracked down on the high fees and rental car companies have agreed to cut back on the charges. It will still cost around 145% more than retail.

It will save you a lot of money when you rent a car if you take the time to fill the tank before turning it in. Be sure you don't wait until you are just outside the airport because gas stations around the airport will have the highest rates. You should fill up a few mines (around ten) from the airport because most rental companies will allow you this many miles AND the costs will be much lower.

The next time you have to rent a car during your travels be sure to read the fine print. Find out all the little things that the company will charge you big fees for and take care of them before you return the car. Remember that not all rental car companies are bound to charge you less for refueling and that could easily double the cost of your rental with todays prices.
