The Excitement Of An Online Auction

By: Christine Harrell

An online auction can be as exciting as being present at a live auction. For those who know a subject, such as antiques or collectibles, there is little more exciting than finding that special piece of furniture or the cranberry glass vase. Holding up the card with the auction buyer's number to make a bid can make one giddy with excitement.

Can an online auction compare? Yes, it can. In fact, some say online auctions can be even more exciting. The pieces up for auction are unique. At a live auction, the faces of those bidding are visible and sometimes "readable." Online the faces are left to the imagination. It becomes a war of one click versus another.

Before bidding online know the values of the items. Do the research. If shopping for an antique vase, know the recent market value. Researching auction items sold online is easy. Go to the auction site and look up past auctions. Most online auctions have a section for auction items sold or closed auctions. A little research can save money online as well as at a live auction.

Set spending limits. Once a value is determined based on research, set a top dollar to be spent on a particular item. Staying within the budget is the hardest part, especially during those closing seconds. Start with a lower bid than the ultimate budgeted spending amount, as the clicking war will probably raise the price after the initial bid. Slowly creep up in bid amounts, and do not reach the budget ceiling unless necessary. If the bidder does not have to spend all of the money, there will be more available for other must-have items later.

Do not be afraid to contact the online seller. Most online auction sites have email communications set up so the buyer and the seller can communicate. Read the description, then contact the seller with pertinent questions. Ask for additional pictures if they are needed. Be sure to keep copies of all communications just in case they are needed after the sale. It is easy to get into a he said-she said dispute if the purchase does not measure up to expectations. By keeping all email communications, there is a record.

Once the bidding starts, plan the strategy. Some bidders like to run the price up early hoping to scare off other potential buyers. However, most online auctions have bidders that linger in the shadows until the last moment. Timing is everything during the last few minutes of an online auction. Practice makes perfect, so if one item is not won do not worry. There will be others.

If the item is won, be sure to communicate with the seller immediately or as soon as possible. Be prepared to pay online. Give complete shipping details in the correspondence with the payment.

Online auctions can save money and time while creating excitement and anticipation. The pinnacle moment is not winning the auction itself, although that is exciting. Opening the box to see the prize is what makes it all worthwhile.
