The End Of Career Is Not Nigh For Jonathan Franzen

By:

Even if you continue reading the book just because you expected it to be a great read depending solely on the reputation of Jonathan Franzen, just plod on a little longer, since youll begin to enjoy the book after around 160 odd pages. Dont expect it to be like The Corrections, because its not. It just closely tracks one particular marriage, and also analyzes the way the leading couple of the title Freedom approach their middle age and reconcile with it. The contemporary American life has not been left untouched either, but that will make it appear to you as if its more like The Corrections.

Difficult To Analyze the Book Objectively

The scene where a newly married man (its Joey, Walter and Pattys son) swallows his own wedding ring and is rummaging through his own faeces to find the ring, is hilarious, complete with a woman (not his wife) banging the door. The book Freedom comes with loads of baggage, thus making it difficult for the readers to view it objectively. Jonathan Franzens previous title The Corrections was hugely successful and thats the reason people expect a lot from a Jonathan Franzen book. Just think of it, he took nine years to write it. We can safely leave this debate aside, however, since Jonathan Franzen is more concerned about the plot of the book and finding meaning in the world full of distractions.

Panoramic Introduction into the Berglund Family

The book starts with wide angle intro to the family of Walter and Patty Berglund, especially the way they are viewed by the neighbours around the area. They are seen as socially conscious and nice people who have lived in the area for about twenty years, raising their children also in the intervening period. Its not that they dont have negative qualities they are painfully self congratulatory and annoying. The problems start when their son Joey falls in love with an older girl who lives next door.
