The Emotional Bank Account

By:

A high level of trust makes communication less difficult & more effective. You will find that trust is the basis of a successful Internet Income Opportunity & Direct Sales Marketing.

The Emotional Bank Account is a metaphor put forth by Stephen Covey in The Seven Habits. It describes the amount of trust thats been built up in a relationship. We make deposits in to an Emotional Bank Account through courtesy, kindness, honesty, & keeping commitments. In this way we build up a reserve.

It takes constant deposits to maintain a high level of trust in our Emotional Bank Account.

We make withdrawals from this Emotional Bank Account through discourtesy, unkindness, dishonesty, & betraying trust, to name a few.

There's six ways to make deposits to our Emotional Bank Accounts:

- Understanding others, learning what they want, what they consider to be a deposit, what is important to them. This is not about what is important to us.
- Attending to the small things constitutes a major deposit.
- Keeping commitments & promises make great deposits while breaking promises is a major withdrawal.
- Clarifying expectations is very important. This helps to avoid misunderstandings & disappointment, which lead to withdrawals. Never assume that everyone has the same expectations if they have not been discussed openly.
- Showing personal integrity generates trust. Covey offers excellent definitions of integrity & honesty that highlight the difference between the two.
Honesty is telling the truth, conforming our words to reality.
Integrity is conforming reality to our words.
- Apologizing honestly when you make a withdrawal. Repeated apologizes may be seen as insincere, & therefore constitute a withdrawal.

One of the most important ways to manifest integrity is to be loyal to those who are not present. This is an indicator to all who are present that they will be treated similarly when they are not present, & trust is established.
