The Definition Of Hypnosis In A Nutshell

By:

Hypnosis is defined as, "A trance-like state in which a person becomes more aware and focused and is more open to suggestion." A lot of us still think of hypnosis as what you see in the cartoons - making you quack and walk around like a duck or do stupid things upon the hypnotist's command.

But on the other hand, there are those who see hypnosis as a medically valid cure for stress, weight problems, or an aid to quit smoking - not some outdated form of entertainment that was last funny in the heyday of Jerry Lewis. You don't sit on a chair and turn into a zombie while gazing intently at a pendulum or anything else that swings. It's done in a controlled, relaxing manner to help put you into a daydream like state - while you're awake and fully aware of what's going on around you.

Indeed, being in a "trance-like state" does not include walking around like a zombie - you can just be sitting there but without any other thoughts clouding your mind. People who use hypnosis tap into their subconscious mind to alter their usual thinking patterns.

For example, one can condition himself or herself that smoking is bad by using hypnosis to change that craving for a smoke into a repulsion.

Hypnosis is, for many, the beginning of new and improved thought patterns, the time when your subconscious is planted with the seeds of positivity. A regular hypnosis routine would make your positive thoughts stronger until it becomes second nature and corrects any negative habit or behavior.

Hypnosis is something that can naturally occur for everyone. It's just like getting engrossed in a good book and not realizing things had been going on while you were so into what you were reading.

You may have also found yourself in a zoned out state where you're so focused on one thing that you have no idea someone is talking to you at that moment.

Hypnosis is akin to a zoned-out state of consciousness.

This happens when somebody is aware of the things around him or her, but only focused on the thing or feeling that hypnotizes him/her and not anything else in the area.

When you've successfully reached a hypnotic state, you - or a hypnosis specialist - can plant alternative thoughts into your subconscious to help change your thinking patterns.

Don't get the impression that hypnosis can cure you like the snap of a finger. It's something that takes place over several sessions in order to become successful, even though many people report feeling different (better) after just one session.

You need to be open-minded to the process in order for it to work. Those who treat hypnosis as a hit-or-miss proposition may have some difficulty getting the outcome they want from their hypnosis sessions.
