The declaration of independence is the act of stating that a country, state, or a certain territory is independent from another territory.

Reasons for the Declaration of Independence

It is done if a territory breaks away from being part of a nation. It may also be done if the nation has been dissolve and each territory will have its own independent government. It may also be done if a new territory separates from a larger state to form its own state and government.

The Declaration of US Independence from Great Britain

The most commonly known declaration of independence in the US is its freedom from Great Britain, which was declared on July 4, 1776. Up to the present, July 4 is celebrated as the Independence Day of the United States and is a national holiday.

The day the Independence was Declaraed for the United States was done by the Second Continental Congress, which was composed of thirteen American colonies which were at war with Great Britain. This document was written mostly by Thomas Jefferson and explains why the Congress, two days prior to the declaration, has voted to declare their freedom from Great Britain.

When the text was finished, the Congress approved the wording of the Declaration on July 4, 1776 and distributed the declaration in different forms. It was first circulated to the public as a printed broadside. The famous version is the signed copy that is being displayed at the National Archives.

Although the declaration was done on July 4, some historians believe that it was signed on August 2, almost a month after its declaration.

Before Texas declared its independence, many were unsure if the aim of the Texas Revolution is to become independent from Mexico or for the reimplementation of the Mexican Constitution of 1824, which gives them more freedom even though they remain under the Mexican rule. During the convention at the Washington-on-the-Brazos, the forty-one delegates agreed on the independence of Texas from Mexico.
